Sometimes you just need a little push to get a game to really click for you. Hopefully this is it!
Fortnite is a massive game when it comes to the Battle Royale genre, and every day it has new people coming in to try it for the first time ever. I’ve been playing this game for a few years now, so I wanted to make a list about everything I wish I knew when I first started.
If you do intend to start playing Fortnite soon, then you probably missed out on a lot of cool battle pass skins that will no longer be in the game again. For this, I recommend you look into getting Fortnite accounts. Not only skins, but emotes and gliders that won’t appear in the store! So once you have that set up, you can jump right into the game and apply these handy tips.
Learn the hot spots
Each season has a new place that everyone loves dropping in. You can probably tell when you’re in the battle bus and see the most players drop at a specific part of the travel. Either learn it to avoid it like the plague or if you’re brave, to drop there and get some eliminations early on! Usually these spots have good reason to being popular, such as having the biggest cluster of chests around or having a lot of quests to do, so it’s useful to know where it is.
Settings
There are a lot of extremely useful settings you can tinker with in Fortnite to make the experience better. Such as the accessibility feature that lets you visualize sound cues. Turning on this setting will show a new HUD element that notifies you of any sound happening in your vicinity, distinguishing them with different icons, such as the sound of walking, shooting, distinct item usage and enemies being rebooted. Find it in the audio settings as “visualize sound effects”.
Another very useful setting to have in mind is in the game settings under the “combat” tab. You’ll see the “preferred item slots” settings, this lets you assign each weapon type or consumable to a different inventory slot. For example, if every time you pick up a shotgun you want it in the third slot, you can just set it to go there by default when you pick it up. This is extremely useful, specially when looting in the heat of battle!
Third party-ing
One of the easiest ways of getting eliminations is by joining a battle that’s already ensued and finishing both parties while they’re harmed. Just go towards the sound of battle and take out whoever looks toughest, and then take out whoever’s left! There’s good reason a lot of people will do this to you, so be careful!
Creative
There are a lot of maps in creative that will allow you to try out the current season weapons and even target practice with them. These are a very useful resource to get used to the changes that the game goes through.
Fortnite twitter
The official Fortnite Twitter posts upcoming events and items that will join the season, so it’s very useful to follow them or other Fortnite content creators. Staying up to speed with everything coming will help you stay at the top, specially in a game that changes as much as this one does.
Don’t sweat the reboot card
Sometimes your party members get eliminated in a place that’s way too hot for you to go into and getting their card, but recently Fortnite made a change to the rebooting system. You can actually purchase your party member’s reboot card if you have enough gold at a reboot van and revive them right then and there! Very useful if you don’t think you will make it out of the zone that has your ally’s reboot card.

Watch streamers
Might sound silly, but a really good way of learning the current season’s meta is to just watch a streamer or content creator play Fortnite to show you the ropes! Of course not everyone is going to be useful but just browsing the Fortnite category in your platform of choice will surely provide you with good strategies eventually, just keep your ear to the ground!
Look for the high ground (at the right time)
When the storm is getting to its final phases, it’s vital to get to the right position at the right time. Usually the high ground is the best place to go!. Keep in mind that you might have to move at some point, and if you activated a forecast tower, you will know exactly where to position yourself. Sometimes the entire safe area will be moved to a different location that was previously covered by the storm, but for the most part betting for the high ground is the way to go. Specially if you have a mobility item.
Command NPCs with ping
I actually didn’t know this for the longest time while playing the game, but the ping system you use to communicate with teammates can also be used to order an NPC you hired! You can make them go to a specific place or prioritize reviving you if you’re downed. This is very useful as you can use them as decoys if a place seems too quiet to explore, among other things.

In conclusion
One of people’s biggest mistakes getting into Fortnite is thinking it’s a simple game for kids. Which in all fairness the skill floor for Fortnite is rather low, but at the highest highs this game takes a lot of skill and reaction times like in the most competitive of games. Getting the hang of it from the start is vital to having the best experience, and that can be quite hard with a game that changes as much and as often as Fortnite does. I hope that this list helps you get accustomed to the more universal tips that you can employ through the seasons so that you can get as many victories as you can!
