Denmark’s national motorcycle-sport federation puts hearing health on the safety agenda for riders, mechanics, officials and spectators — with Danish-designed earplugs that carry laboratory certification for every product in the range
DENMARK — [7] September 2026 — Earmuffz, the Danish-designed brand of certified noise-reducing earplugs, has been named the official hearing partner of Danmarks Motor Union (DMU), the national federation for motorcycle sport in Denmark. The partnership, launched in August 2026, gives DMU’s members access to hearing protection that is individually tested and certified for every product, together with DMU member benefits.
A federation that treats noise as a safety issue
Founded in 1914 and affiliated to the Danish Sports Confederation (DIF) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), DMU governs motocross, speedway, road racing, trial and enduro through clubs across Denmark. Safety sits at the centre of its work: in the federation’s 2023 member survey, members named safety as the area they most wanted DMU to prioritise.
The Earmuffz partnership extends that focus to a risk that is easy to overlook because it is invisible and painless while it happens. As DMU put it in announcing the agreement, motorsport is associated with high sound levels — for riders, mechanics, officials and spectators alike — and the federation wants to underline the importance of protecting hearing both on and around the track.
“We at DMU are very pleased with our partnership with Earmuffz. It gives us the opportunity to offer our members a strong, high-quality product that can help protect their hearing and thereby contribute positively to their health, both now and in the long term. We see Earmuffz as a strong partner with quality products that are very well suited to the needs of motorsport.”

How loud is motorsport?
Hearing damage begins with sustained exposure above 85 dB(A), and the safe exposure time halves for every 3 dB above that: roughly 15 minutes at 100 dB(A) and under two minutes at 110 dB(A), according to the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Motorcycle sport lives well above those levels. Knowing how loud is too loud is the first step; the research below is why DMU chose to act.
- Under the helmet. Wind noise alone reaches around 90 dB(A) at 65 km/h and climbs to about 110 dB(A) at 160 km/h — before engine noise is added (McCombe & Binnington, British Journal of Sports Medicine, 1994).
- The riders. In the same study, 45% of Grand Prix motorcycle racers tested had hearing loss greater than expected for their age.
- The machines. The FIM’s 2026 sound regulations permit up to 111 dB(A) for motocross and 115 dB(A) for track racing (speedway), measured at two metres.
- Trackside. A NIOSH study of motor racing recorded 96 dB(A) in spectator areas and 114 dB(A) for drivers. The daily safe dose was used up in under an hour for spectators, within minutes for team members, and in less than a minute for drivers.
The damage is permanent. The World Health Organization estimates that 430 million people worldwide live with disabling hearing loss and that more than a billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss from unsafe listening. Denmark is not immune: 777,000 Danes — 16.1% of adults — reported tinnitus in 2021, a 27% increase since 2017, with the steepest rise among 16-to-24-year-olds (Den Nationale Sundhedsprofil, via Høreforeningen). That is the age at which many riders are competing most.
Why Earmuffz
Certified, not claimed. Every Earmuffz product holds its own laboratory certification. All products were tested in accredited laboratories in 2025 to EN 352-2 — the European standard for earplugs that underpins CE marking under the EU PPE Regulation — and to ANSI S3.19, the US test method behind the EPA Noise Reduction Rating. Most consumer earplugs rely on a manufacturer’s self-declaration. Earmuffz holds lab certificates per product, so a rider, a mechanic or a parent in the stands knows precisely what protection they are getting.
Designed in Denmark. Two years of research and development went into reusable earplugs built from food-grade silicone, with four ear-tip sizes for a secure fit, a low profile that sits comfortably under a helmet, and a spring-lock carry case. Every pair comes with a two-year warranty.
A certified level for every situation. Motorsport asks different things of hearing protection depending on where you stand. For riders, Earmuffz Adventure reduces wind and engine noise by 19 dB (SNR) while preserving the sounds that matter — traffic, horns and helmet communication systems. For mechanics, officials and spectators, Earmuffz Advanced takes the edge off engine revs and sudden bursts while keeping commentary and conversation clear, with a removable insert for extra reduction. For those who want one pair for the whole paddock, the Earmuffz Complete Series offers four certified levels from 15 to 24 dB (SNR) in a single pair. And for the night before race day — or the hotel room at an away round — Earmuffz Sleep reduces noise by 26 dB (SNR). Riders can also find dedicated guidance on motorcycle hearing protection and motorcycle ear plugs on the Earmuffz website.
The aim is not silence. Noise-reducing earplugs lower the level of harmful sound while keeping the world audible, which is why they also serve people who need ear protection at concerts, in the workplace or when living with tinnitus.
“Motorsport is one of the loudest environments most people will ever spend a weekend in, and the damage it does to hearing is silent and permanent. DMU has chosen to treat hearing as a safety matter rather than an afterthought, which is exactly how we think about it. Every Earmuffz product is tested and certified individually, so whether you are on the bike, in the pit or in the stands, you know what protection you are getting. We are proud to stand alongside DMU as it makes hearing part of the safety conversation in Danish motorsport.”

A strong start
The partnership launched across DMU’s channels in the final week of August 2026: an announcement on dmusport.dk on 28 August, member benefits, a direct email to the federation’s members and a video introducing the partnership. The early response from members has been strong, and the partners will continue to develop the collaboration through the coming season.
