A core function of schools is to pass knowledge to students from its fountain of knowledge. To fully provide students with the knowledge, schools must adopt the best system. An effective management system will not only enable schools to meet targets but will also aid them in doing so in a fast and convenient way.
Due to advanced technology, the management system that enables school administrators to efficiently manage students is the student management system. The aim of this article is to provide a detailed explanation of this school management system and its history.
Student Management Software
Student management software is a highly efficient online school management software. It is useful in storing student data on attendance hence the reason it is commonly referred to as an attendance management system.
The software also stores data on examinations, fee payments, extracurricular activities, etc. Data stored in this software can be retrieved after many years as it provides safe storage. Since the advent of this software, it has successfully relieved the stress of school management using its advanced time-efficient features.
History of the School Management Software
School management software (SMS) is also known as a ‘student information system’ (SIS), ‘management information system’ (MIS), ‘school information management system’ (SIMS), ‘management information system’ (MIS), or ‘learning management system’ (LMS).
It was invented between 1982 – 1983 by Philip Neal. Neal was a high school teacher in Luton, the United Kingdom. At the time of its invention, he was a teacher at Lea Manor High School
In the same year, the Bedfordshire Country Council developed the system promoting its usage in 1984. Teachers used the software to easily receive student data and store them. It also served as a communication channel between the school admin and parents/guardians.
In a short time, Neal enabled the software to perform more functions as he was smart and possessed advanced programming skills. He was proactive in proferring solutions with the software before they even emanated.
During the 90s when classrooms started having more personal computers, the system thrived massively. In 1997, about 500,000 computers were added to schools by districts to enable school admins efficiently carry out their tasks.
Since schools had more computers and the internet was already in existence then, the student management software helped schools save more money. The software was able to perform this function since lesser school admin was needed which reduced the number of staff to receive a salary.
Still, in the 90s, the software could do more than just data input and output. In a short time, the system had different versions as companies started to develop their unique student management system. Other versions soon became common in several schools especially as they had different mouth-watering deals.
Over time, cloud-based technology was added to the unique features of the student management system. It enhanced the system’s abilities by introducing Saas (Software as a service) which enabled better communication and data storage.
Conclusion
The evolution of the school lms has created a better school administrative process. Its efficient features enable schools to effectively perform their core functions leaving time for secondary responsibilities. Since the invention of this software, schools have had an easier time managing students which improve student performance.
