  • The recently released Apple Intelligence feature, limited to newer devices with Apple silicon, offers advanced AI features such as ChatGPT integration.

Apple iOS 18 Public Beta

Apple has released the public beta version of its upcoming iOS 18 software, allowing users to test new features before the official launch this fall. The beta version is available for download on iPhones released in 2018 or later, including models from the iPhone XR to the latest iPhone 15 Pro. Users can access the beta by signing up on Apple’s Beta Software Program website and following the installation instructions.

The iOS 18 update brings several significant changes to the iPhone’s user interface and functionality. Key updates include a redesigned lock screen, home screen, and Control Center, offering more customization options.

Users can now place app icons anywhere on the home screen, change app icons to dark mode, and customize the Control Center with new types of controls. The Photos app has been redesigned to use AI for organizing photos into trips or albums, and the Messages app now supports emoji reactions and text formatting options like bold and italics.

Apple Intelligence

One of the most anticipated features of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, an AI service that can answer questions, control the iPhone, and generate images. Announced in June, Apple Intelligence will be available in a beta version this fall, with some features like ChatGPT integration and Siri improvements expected later in the year. Apple Intelligence is powered by the company’s large language models and requires Apple silicon, making it exclusive to newer devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPad models with M1 or newer chipsets.

Apple Intelligence offers three main capabilities: language, images, and action. Language features include tools like Rewrite and Proofread for text editing, priority notifications, and Smart Reply in the Mail app. The Images capability allows users to generate images based on descriptions and create personalized emoji through the Genmoji feature. The Action capability enhances Siri’s functionality, enabling it to understand context better and perform tasks like adding addresses to contact cards or explaining phone functions.

iOS 18 New Features and Enhancements

iOS 18 introduces several new features aimed at improving the user experience and customization. Users can now hide or lock apps to prevent unauthorized access, and the Photos app has been overhauled to include AI-powered search and editing tools.

The Messages app now supports RCS messaging, allowing for richer media and reading receipts when texting non-iPhone users. Additionally, iPhones with iOS 18 can send texts via satellite when there is no Wi-Fi or cell service, a feature available on the iPhone 14 and newer models.

The update also includes a new Passwords app for managing passwords and ID verification codes, and a feature called iPhone Mirroring that allows users to control their iPhone from a Mac. Other notable additions include a redesigned Control Center, customizable app icons, and enhanced privacy features like the ability to hide apps and their notifications.
