Antminer Z15 PRO vs Antminer S23 Hydro: Equihash and SHA-256 Compared

The Antminer Z15 PRO and the Antminer S23 Hydro are often shortlisted together, and that is exactly where the confusion starts. They are not two versions of the same product. They mine different coins, on different algorithms, with different cooling, and they carry very different kinds of risk. This guide explains what actually separates them, in plain terms, so the decision is made on mechanics rather than on a single headline number.

One clarification first, because it trips people up constantly: the S23 Hydro is a 580 TH/s unit drawing 5,510 W. It is not the S23 Hyd 3U, which is a rack-mounted 1.16 PH/s machine drawing 11,020 W. Same family, same 9.5 J/TH efficiency, roughly double the density and double the price. Everything below refers to the S23 Hydro.

The fundamental difference: two different algorithms

Every other difference follows from this one. The Z15 PRO is an Equihash ASIC. It mines Zcash and other Equihash coins, and it can mine nothing else. The S23 Hydro is a SHA-256 ASIC. It mines Bitcoin, and it benefits from the largest and most liquid mining reward market that exists.

This matters more than any specification on the box. An ASIC is purpose-built silicon. If the coin it targets falls out of favour, the hardware cannot be redirected to a different one. That is the single most important risk to understand before buying either machine, and it is asymmetric: Equihash is a narrow market, SHA-256 is the widest one in the industry.

What “hashrate” means on each machine

The two numbers are not comparable, and putting them side by side without explanation is misleading. The Z15 PRO produces 840 kilohashes per second on Equihash. The S23 Hydro produces 580 terahashes per second on SHA-256. Those are different units measuring different work on different networks. A larger number does not mean a better machine here; what matters is what each network pays for that work.

Revenue per megawatt-hour: the only fair comparison

Because the hashrate units are incompatible, the honest way to compare these machines is to ask what each one produces per megawatt-hour of electricity consumed. That normalises away algorithm, coin and scale, and it answers the question an owner actually cares about: what does an hour of power turn into?

Gross revenue per megawatt-hour consumed, before electricity, hosting, depreciation or downtime.

At the time of writing the Z15 PRO was producing roughly 3.3 times what the S23 Hydro produced on the same electricity. That sounds decisive, and it is genuinely significant. But it comes with a caveat that has to be read alongside it.

The same analysis measured the Z15 PRO above $700 per megawatt-hour one week earlier. That is a 16 percent fall in seven days, and it happened while Zcash was rising. Altcoin mining revenue tracks its coin closely and moves far faster than Bitcoin revenue does. A snapshot like this is not a run rate, and it is not a profit figure: it is gross revenue before electricity, hosting, depreciation and downtime.

Cooling: air versus hydro, and why it decides where the machine can live

The Z15 PRO is air-cooled. It is compact at 245 by 132 by 290 millimetres, and it can be deployed in a conventional air-cooled environment. The S23 Hydro is liquid-cooled and needs a hydro loop, which means it belongs in a facility built for it rather than a spare room.

The trade-off is noise and heat density. The S23 Hydro is rated at 50 decibels, which is unusually quiet for its output, because liquid carries heat away far more effectively than fans moving air. That is what allows 580 TH/s in a chassis this size. It also means the machine is effectively hosting-only for most buyers.

Three-phase power is a real constraint

The S23 Hydro runs on 380 to 415 volts across three phases. Residential supply does not provide that. Anyone considering this unit outside a data centre should confirm the electrical supply before anything else, because it is the constraint most likely to stop the project.

What each machine costs to run

Electricity is the input that decides the outcome, and it is the one an owner can actually fix. At a seven-year fixed rate of $0.0364 per kilowatt-hour, the Z15 PRO consumes about $2.43 of electricity per day and the S23 Hydro about $4.81. Those figures do not move when the coin does.

That asymmetry is the practical argument for a fixed energy contract on either machine. Revenue per megawatt-hour will swing by hundreds of dollars as coins move. The cost side stays exactly where it was fixed, which is what makes the numbers legible over a multi-year hold.

Which one suits which owner

Consider the Antminer Z15 PRO if

●       You want exposure to Zcash specifically and accept algorithm lock-in.

●       You have air-cooled capacity, or you are hosting it and do not need a hydro loop.

●       You are comfortable with revenue that moves quickly in both directions.

●       You are diversifying alongside existing Bitcoin hardware rather than replacing it.

Consider the Antminer S23 Hydro if

●       You want the deepest and most liquid mining reward market available.

●       You have, or are buying, hosting with a hydro loop and three-phase power.

●       You prefer lower algorithm risk over a higher current revenue figure.

●       You are building a position you intend to hold for several years.

The verdict

These machines are not competitors so much as different instruments. The Z15 PRO currently pays a premium per megawatt-hour, and that premium is real, but it is compensation for accepting a narrower reward market, faster revenue swings and hardware that cannot be repurposed. The S23 Hydro pays less per megawatt-hour and gives up flexibility on cooling and power, in exchange for the most durable reward market in mining.

For most owners building a long position, the S23 Hydro is the core holding and the Z15 PRO is a satellite. Whichever route is chosen, fix the electricity price first: it is the only variable in the calculation that will still be predictable in three years.
