Accessible Vehicle Histories: Interview with Jesse Williams, CEO of Vehicle History

Vehicle History allows prospective buyers to quickly and easily gain access to automotive information for free. Since its founding in 2015, the company has amassed high-volume monthly traffic all the while adding new vehicles to its extensive roster. In this interview with TechBullion, CEO and founder Jesse Williams talks more about the impact the company has made.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Jesse Williams, CEO and founder of Vehicle History, a free used car database system with over 40 million vehicle history reports.

What was your career like before Vehicle History?

My love for business began when I was young. When I was fifteen, I made my first business on the web, eDirect, and that made $40 million in sales in its first year. In 2007, I reinvested my profits from that into a multi-million supplement brand chain. It was a long chain of different, successful business ventures that ultimately led me to launch Car History Group—Vehicle History’s parent company—in 2012.

Can you tell us more about Vehicle History?

Vehicle History provides used car buyers with data-driven insight with information gathered from other review sites, owner feedback, industry experts, vehicle associations, and many other sources brought together by our editorial team through weeks of dedicated research.

Last year, we also added car reviews to the site, which presents a vehicle summary, outlines the pros and cons, and aggregates reviews from consumers and critics alike. Right now, we cover most vehicles from 2005-2018.

What inspired you to build this company?

I have a personal passion for cars, and for me, following my interests has always yielded the best results. Outside of that, I’ve noticed that other sites that provided a similar service were charging for their reports. Their prices could range from $25 to even $100, and they would only provide reports for a single vehicle. That can be an easy hurdle to surmount for one car, but what if you want to compare two or three vehicles at a time? Prices like that could quickly add up.

It just seemed ridiculous to me, so I set out to get rid of the financial gatekeeping but also provide worthwhile information, saving buyers both time and money.

How has Vehicle History grown since its official launch in 2016?

Our team of experts is always building on the features we provide. As I said before, we added car reviews to the website last year, but I’m also proud to say that Vehicle History surpassed 4 million users a month and has achieved 500,000 customer reviews thus far.

How have you made your company more adaptable over the years?

A hallmark of our success has been to constantly change and evolve our business model. We do annual check-ins on how we can improve our user experience and quality of life, and we’ve always found a way to keep making positive changes to our product by never settling.

What piece of advice would you pass on to someone else getting started?

As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have confidence in our vision and be willing to take chances. The best thing I can say is to stay open-minded to the opinions of others and always listen to feedback. It’s critical we always keep learning and improving our business.

What are your thoughts about the future?

I’m very excited; I see so many great new ideas from the next generation of entrepreneurs. I believe we’ll always face challenges as a society, but the future remains very bright.
