Alibag, Maharashtra – June 5, 2025 | World Environment Day

On the 5th of June, on the occasion of World Environment Day, held at Alibag, Maharashtra, Varun Hiremath, Co-Founder of the Hiremath Family Foundation, came up with an initiative towards environmental change in rural India known as the Green Change. It was taken to take a step towards empowering rural youth and educate the rural children about sustainability and waste management at the village level.

The theme of the initiative stands as “Our Land, Our Future.” This imparts knowledge to the children on sustainability so that they can address the issues arising from environmental misuse and how to handle them.  Varun Hiremath, with the help of his foundation inculcated future leadership skills in them, directing them to create a cleaner, greener communities .

The participation of the students almost crossed over 150, consisting of students from government schools in the neighbourhood participated with a great amount of enthusiasm. They learnt about various topics like waste segregation, composting, plastic hazards, and waste minimization, how to construct compost pits, draw posters for environmental awareness, plan local clean-up drives, reduce plastic use, and promote reusable materials

“True environmental change starts from the ground — and there’s no ground more fertile than young minds,” said Varun Hiremath, Co-Founder of the Hiremath Family Foundation. “With Green Change, we’re not just teaching children how to manage waste — we’re helping them become the leaders of tomorrow’s sustainable world.”

The Three Phases of Green Change

The “Green Change” initiative consisted of three key phases:

  1. Eco-Literacy Workshops: The techniques of how to manage household and school waste, waste sorting, consumption reduction, and how to live in ways that can help sustainability were introduced.

  2. School-Led Action: The students initiated campaigns at their schools by implementing such practices as waste audits, installation of bins to dispose of wastes, and clean-up campaigns. In addition to this, one had environmental awareness such as plays, and poster-making competitions.

  3. Village Integration: Students worked in collaboration with the local panchayats and their families and created awareness and brought sustainable solutions in waste management to their villages, respectively.

The first phase took place in three villages at Alibag. Then the program has also been planned to extend to six more villages by December 2025. It has got massive support from local teachers and school authorities, as well as community members. This has also led to the adoption of new practices in various households.

A Symbolic Green March

The children promoted the idea to the villagers by giving them seed balls to plant into local farmlands or vacant plots to grow greenery. In addition, they waved banners with written inscriptions, saying, Bhoomi Meri Jimmedari (My Earth, My Responsibility) during the Green March that was the most significant part of the program.

“Planting saplings is important. But planting leadership in our youth — that’s how real roots grow,” Varun Hiremath Ceo added. Green Change isn’t just a campaign; it’s a shift in mindset that has the power to create lasting impact.”
