How Remote Work Saves Companies $11K Per Employee—and Helps Workers Cut Costs, Too

The financial and operational benefits of remote and hybrid work continue to drive global hiring trends. Owl Labs’s 2024 State of Hybrid Work report found that hybrid workers save an average of $42 per day when they work remotely versus from the office, reducing personal expenses and improving work-life balance. Buffer’s 2023 State of Remote Work report highlights that 82% of remote employees primarily work from home, allowing them to reinvest their earnings in their home countries.

At the same time, remote work is also reshaping how businesses structure their teams. The Buffer research found that 62% of employees collaborate with teammates across different time zones, while 74% of respondents said their company operates in multiple time zones. This shift reflects a growing recognition that talent is no longer confined to specific locations, enabling businesses to build diverse, high-performing teams on a global scale.

An Estonian Startup Embraces Global Hiring

The Estonian content marketing platform PRNEWS.IO is one such company adapting to this trend. The startup employs professionals across multiple countries, including Estonia, Ukraine, Armenia, Poland, Belgium, and the United States. While remote work remains a core part of the company’s hiring strategy, it also maintains offices in Tallinn (Estonia) and Mykolaiv (Ukraine), offering both on-site and remote opportunities.

In 2024, PRNEWS.IO significantly expanded its headcount, growing by 35% and welcoming professionals from various locations while reinforcing its presence in key markets. This growth was driven by the company’s focus on acquiring new customers and increasing sales volume, creating a demand for additional talent. Today, 37% of the startup’s workforce operates fully remotely, with six open positions currently available—most of them remote roles.

Remote Expansion and Talent Growth

The shift toward remote and hybrid work is a global trend. According to WFH Research’s Working Arrangements and Attitudes (SWAA) 2024 study, 12.5% of full-time employees in the U.S. work from home, and Upwork projects that by 2025, 32.6 million Americans (22% of the workforce) will be working remotely.

Companies are also benefiting financially from remote work. Global Workplace Analytics reports that businesses can save approximately $11,000 per year for each employee who works remotely at least two or three days a week. These savings contribute to long-term sustainability for both businesses and individuals.

One of the many professionals integrated into this environment from afar is Yerkebulan Kenzhebek, a front-end developer from Kazakhstan. He discovered PRNEWS.IO on LinkedIn and was drawn to its approach to digital PR.

“One of the things I really enjoy is the balance between technical challenges and creativity. Every project brings new opportunities to learn and improve,” he shares. “Our team is a collaborative group of professionals, each bringing unique expertise and perspectives to the table. The friendly atmosphere and mutual respect among team members are what I love about my team,” Yerkebulan concludes.

“We believe in nurturing talent and providing opportunities to kick-start careers in a remote work environment. Thus, we build employee relations on trust and honest feedback,” says Alina Samsina, Head of HR at PRNEWS.IO. “Remote staffing is changing the game for businesses, and we are aligning all our internal operational processes to adapt remote employees to our work experience and culture mindset.”

Sustainable Growth as a Bootstrapped Company

PRNEWS.IO’s commitment to remote hiring is complemented by strong business performance. In 2024, the company’s revenue grew by 30%, reaching €5.2 million—three times faster than the market average. The company also contributed over €375,000 in taxes in Estonia, reinforcing its economic impact in the region.

While many startups depend on external funding, PRNEWS.IO has sustained consistent growth as a fully bootstrapped company. The success of these companies is particularly evident in Central and Eastern Europe, where 31% of unicorns have grown without venture capital, according to the State of European Tech 21 Study—five times higher than the rest of Europe. Estonia, in particular, has the highest startup density per capita, highlighting its strong entrepreneurial ecosystem. As an Estonian company, PRNEWS.IO exemplifies this spirit of financial independence, navigating market challenges while focusing on long-term value for its clients and employees.

Looking ahead to 2025, PRNEWS.IO plans to expand its team and increase salaries, projecting a 50% rise in labor tax contributions to Estonia. Its hybrid work model, global talent acquisition, and sustainable business strategy position it as a resilient and forward-thinking company in the evolving digital landscape.
