7 Types Of Fabric You Should Know About

Anyone who is starting to sew is in love with the variety of fabrics that exist. There’s no way to avoid it! There are so many colours, prints and textures, that it’s easy to be enchanted and, at the same time, a little lost!

So, you end up buying fabrics because you liked the print, but without knowing exactly what you’re going to use it for And when you decide Then the fabric is not ideal. It’s either too soft, or transparent, or stretchy. Raise your hand to the most experienced reader, who has never been through this. Some of us even have fabrics sitting in the closet, still not knowing exactly what to use them for. – It is not? You can confess that we don’t judge!

That’s why with the help of Baisa Crafts we decided to make a list with a basic guide about 7 different types of fabric.

7 different types of fabric:

Let’s get down to business in practice? Here you will discover our shortlist and increase your knowledge in this sewing world! Come on?

1. Mesh

The mesh is a super light and soft fabric. It is made with 100% synthetic fabrics but still manages to allow good perspiration through the fabric.

It is an ideal fabric for making clothes that will be worn on the go! This is because the mesh has a certain elasticity and allows great comfort and freedom for whoever is using it.

Children’s and pet clothes, pyjamas, t-shirts, skirts – anything that is comfortable and doesn’t require a lot of “fancy” can be produced with this fabric.

2. Satin

This is a somewhat refined fabric. It features a super characteristic shine! Even if you don’t know this, you’ve probably seen him around in party clothes.

Satin is also a synthetic fabric like mesh, however, it is produced using the weaving technique, so it has no elasticity. To get around this inflexibility and bring greater comfort to some types of garments, there is a variation in satin that uses elastane in the composition. So, this is a fabric that can also be quite versatile – just knowing how to choose the right variety of it.

The charmeuse satin is 100% polyester, has a more intense shine and is fuller. It is ideal for party clothes, skirts that need some structure and beautiful fit, scarves and linings. Satin with spandex maintains the shine, however it is lighter and has a less structured fit. It is used for tight-fitting lingerie, pyjamas, shirts and dresses (as it contains spandex and will allow for a greater range of motion).

3. Canvas

This is a super-resistant fabric! It exists in natural or synthetic versions.  Its texture is something between a tough fabric and a canvas – and it has no elasticity. As the canvas is heavily reinforced, this fabric is mainly used for upholstery and bags.

Anyone who has already practised painting knows that canvas is also the main raw material for panels and paintings. Nowadays, with digital prints, these canvas boards and panels are even easier to make, even if painting isn’t your forte!

4. Tricoline

This is an amazing type of fabric! It’s super versatile and works well for both machine sewing and pasting. It doesn’t fray and provides a great thermal sensation because it’s 100% made of cotton.

Tricoline is used to make shirts, skirts, dresses, gowns, cartons, handicrafts in general. This is a flat fabric so it has no elasticity. It doesn’t slide, so it’s perfect for beginners. And for this reason, it is also preferred by artisans and artists who produce patchwork.

5. Gabardine

100% synthetic, this fabric is mainly used for making tailoring clothes. Pants and coats are pieces that go very well with a raincoat, also called a raincoat. The way it is woven makes the raincoat seen up close to have little parallel stripes, which offer a different texture to the pieces.

It is a very rigid fabric, but soft to the touch. Its light satin feel and strength make it a great fabric for decorative applications such as pillows and sofa covers.

6. Mousseline

The mousseline is a super-thin synthetic fabric, with transparency, which has appeared with strength in recent seasons. It was often seen in dresses and skirts with an opaque lining, and a mousseline outer body, which allows the lining to be seen.

Its touch is very soft, which provides a wonderful fit! That’s why it is often used in flowing and flowing dresses. The best thing about this fabric is that, in addition to being beautiful, it is difficult to wrinkle – and that’s good! As it is not very resistant to iron. Therefore: be extra careful when passing your productions made with mousseline!

7. Microfiber

Microfiber explains so much of itself by name alone. The fabric is composed of very fine polyester yarns. In practice, this produces a very resistant and inelastic fabric.

Microfiber is often used for sports and beach clothing, as it has a similar feel to nylon, but is more pleasant to wear. For more updates like this, you can visit Baisa Crafts’s blog where they update everything related to Indian fashion and clothing.
