5 Tips to Perfect Your College Applications

Applying to college is an exciting milestone, and hopefully, your parents took advantage of the best college savings plans, meaning you’ll have some help covering the bill.

While it may be time consuming, it’s important to use careful planning and attention to detail when completing your college applications. A strong application not only increases your chances of getting accepted but also opens the door to potential scholarships and financial aid — because, in addition to your application, you’re probably considering how much college costs, too.

Here are five tips to help you create an application that showcases your strengths and unique qualities:

1. Write a Killer Essay

Your essay is one of the few parts of your application that allows you to share your unique voice. Admissions officers read countless essays, so it’s important to make yours memorable and write about a topic that matters to you.

Start with a compelling hook to draw the reader in and don’t be afraid to show your personality. Whether you’re sharing a personal experience, describing a challenge you overcame, or discussing a passion, make sure your essay is genuine and reflects who you are.

Remember, this is your chance to show that you’re more than grades and test scores — so make it count!

2. Hype Up Your Extracurriculars

Colleges want well-rounded students who are active both in and out of the classroom. Your extracurricular activities could show admissions officers what you’re passionate about and how you contribute to your community.

Whether it’s sports, music, volunteering, or a part-time job, highlight your most significant achievements and leadership roles. Don’t just list your activities — show how they’ve helped you grow and how they’ve prepared you for college life.

3. Nail Your Interview with Your Personality

Not all colleges require interviews, but if you have the chance to meet with an admissions officer or alum, take it! Interviews are a great way to personalize your application and make a lasting impression.

While it’s important to prepare answers to common questions (like “Why do you want to attend this college?”), don’t forget to be yourself.

4. Choose Recommenders Who Know You Well

Your letters of recommendation could play a crucial role in your application, so choose recommenders who know you well and can speak to your strengths.

When requesting a recommendation, give your recommender plenty of time and provide them with details about your accomplishments, goals and what you’re applying for. This could help them write a more personalized and impactful letter that truly highlights your strengths.

5. Double-Check Everything

Before you hit submit, make sure you’ve double-checked every part of your application.

Look for spelling and grammar errors, ensure your personal information is accurate and verify that all required materials have been uploaded. It may also be a good idea to have a family member, friend, or teacher review your application to catch anything you might have missed. A clean, error-free application shows attention to detail and leaves a positive impression on admissions officers.

You Could Perfect Your College Application

Perfecting your college application takes effort, but it may be well worth it if those acceptance letters start rolling in.

By writing a compelling essay, showcasing your extracurriculars, letting your personality shine in interviews, choosing strong recommenders and double-checking your work, you’ll be giving yourself the best chance to succeed.

And while you’re working hard on your application, don’t forget to consider the financial side of things. Understanding the best college savings plans could be a great help in managing the costs of higher education
