4 Sustainable Alternatives To Everyday Cleaning Products

Sustainable Alternatives

So, you are wanting to do a bit of spring cleaning, or maybe your lease is almost up and you want to avoid getting hit with a massive cleaning bill. When you are wanting to do a deep clean, it can be tempting to just pour bleach everywhere and hope for the best, but the cleaning products we buy can have a huge impact on the environment

They often contain chemicals that lead to river, soil, and air pollution. Here are some tips for cleaning your space cheaply and sustainably.

1. Make a plan

Before you throw yourself into tasks at random, it is best to come up with a plan of attack. Creating a cleaning plan allows you to see what tasks need to be done and what products you need. In taking your time, you can make sure that your cleaning has as little impact on the environment as possible. It also makes the whole process a lot less stressful. Who knows, you might even enjoy yourself.

2. Ditch the wipes

I get it, wet wipes are super convenient. You wipe the surface, gather all that dirt, simply throw away the wipe and forget about it. The thing is these wipes are made from plastics which means they are not biodegradable. Your wipe does not cease to exist once you throw it in the bin and forget about it. It spends a lifetime in a landfill somewhere.

When cleaning, switch out your disposable wipes for a microfibre cloth. These cloths are effective and reusable which means you will still get that deep clean, but also save money in the long run. If you are struggling to let go of your cleaning wipes, perhaps swap out your usual brand for an eco-friendly alternative like Cheeky Panda Bamboo Wipes.

3. Make your own cleaning products

If you are looking to clean sustainably and on a budget, your best option is to make your own cleaning products. Believe it or not, you can make effective cleaning products using some common ingredients you may already have in your cupboards.

To get you started on your DIY journey, here are a few easy recipes for cheap, environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical cleaning products.

  • All-purpose surface cleaner: Combine equal parts water with equal parts white vinegar and pour into a spray bottle. Add in some lemon rind and let the mixture infuse for a week or so. Voila! Simply spray onto surfaces that need cleaning and wipe down with a cloth. It will leave your surfaces smelling lemony fresh and does not contain any harmful chemicals. It’s good for your pockets and the planet.
  • Oven cleaner: Put some baking powder in a bowl and mix in water until thick paste forms. Apply the paste to areas where there are dirt and grime and leave it to dry overnight. The next day simply wipes away the dried baking power with a none scrub sponge. Don’t use a scrubbing sponge as this could damage the surface of the oven.
  • Toilet cleaner: Add a teaspoon of tea tree oil to some vinegar and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray generously on the toilet seat and the outside of the bowl and wipe with a cloth. To clean the inside of the bowl, sprinkle some baking soda along the edges and scrub with a toilet brush. Easy peasy, you have a toilet so clean you could eat off it — I mean if you really wanted to.

You can find cleaning recipes like this just about anywhere on the internet. Using simple products like vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and essential oils can be just as effective. It costs a fraction of the price of conventional cleaning products and it is also a lot better for the environment.

4. Be dedicated to helping the environment

It takes time and dedication to clean in a way that is environmentally-friendly, but it certainly does not take a lot of money. In taking out this time to create your own cleaning products, you can get your space spotless without hurting the environment or the bank.
