The Copa del Rey, or Spanish Football Cup, is one of the oldest competitions in European football and one of the winners qualify for both Europa League and Supercopa de Espana – four-team tournament featuring champions from La Liga and Copa del Rey – once won.
It is the pinnacle of Spanish soccer and boasts high public recognition. The winning team receives the “Copa del Rey Mapfre de Vela”, an elegant silver trophy with gold trim. Furthermore, they receive a cheque for 100,000 euros as prize money.
Real Madrid has not enjoyed much success in the Copa del Rey of late, losing two finals under Vicente del Bosque’s tenure – in 2002 against Deportivo La Coruna at home and ultimately succumbing 2-1; then in 2014 when Gareth Bale scored an unexpected winner against Barcelona to give Carlo Ancelotti his inaugural trophy as Madrid manager.

Supercopa de Espaa
The Supercopa de Espaa is an annual mid-season tournament between the winners of La Liga and Copa del Rey. Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet for this title, making for an exciting matchup that promises a close contest between these two sides. It will be exciting to watch them duke it out over three matches this year!
Los merengues are the defending Champions and have already qualified for El Clasico after defeating Valencia and Real Betis. El Clasico will take place on January 15 at Estadio Rey Fahd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
