The reason we build a deck is to enjoy summers on it. Summer is an amazing season, but it can be a double-edged sword for your deck. It creates a warm atmosphere perfect to spend time outdoors, it can also turn your deck into a scorching zone. Even if you have an acrylic cover or a louvered roof over it, the sun will get to it if you don’t have any outdoor solar shades. Maybe you thought about installing them, but you haven’t made a decision yet. Maybe your deck builder gave you an estimate already but you are not sure how effective they are? Let’s explore that in this article.
Solar Shade Benefits- A Shield From the Sun’s Fury
Outdoor solar shades offer a lot of benefits for your deck. This will enhance your deck’s usability and enjoyment at the same time.
- Heat reduction – Solar shades are a barrier and block a significant percentage of the sun’s heat rays. This lowers the temperature on your deck and makes it a more comfortable space. If you have a louvered roof installed over it you can open it up and breeze will make your deck living haven.
- Sun protection – We all know that the ultraviolet (UV) rays can be damaging to our skin and eyes. Solar shades will block UV rays and will allow you to enjoy the outdoor without sunburn or squinting.
- Glare Reduction – The harsh glare of the sun can make it difficult to relax or entertain on your deck. Solar shades filter sunlight, creating a more pleasant and comfortable environment.
- Furniture Protection – Your furniture will benefit from the solar shades too. Direct sunlight can damage your deck furniture and solar shades will prevent this.
Striking the Balance Between Shade and Openness
The effectiveness of solar shades in keeping your deck cool depends on a few factors:
- Fabric Opacity: Solar shades come in varying degrees of openness. A higher openness rating allows more light and airflow but provides less shade. Conversely, a lower openness rating offers more shade but restricts light and ventilation. Choose the opacity that balances your needs for shade, comfort, and view.
- Sun Orientation: Consider the position of your deck relative to the sun. If your deck receives direct afternoon sun, a denser shade will be more effective. For morning or evening sun, a lighter shade might suffice.
- Airflow: While you seek shade, proper air circulation is still important. Consider installing retractable shades or choosing a fabric that allows some airflow to prevent stagnant heat buildup under the deck.
Beyond the Basics: Additional Considerations
- Material: Solar shades come in various materials like mesh, vinyl, and polyester. Each offers different levels of durability, UV protection, and aesthetics. Consider your budget and desired features when choosing a material.
- Style and Design: Solar shades come in a variety of styles, including retractable awnings, sail shades, and roller shades. Choose one that complements your deck’s design and functionality.
Overall, outdoor solar shades can be very effective, especially if your deck is in front of the sun. It will keep your place cooler and more comfortable. Choosing solar shades is another task, but by considering the factors mentioned above, you can choose the right shades for your deck.
There are a few types of solar shades. If you have a motorized louvered roof installed, going for motorized retractable patio screens would be the perfect option. Not required, but you would enjoy it. And on top of that, it will increase your home’s value if you decide to sell it later.
