10 questions for the Utopia Ecosystem team

Blockchain technology has come a long way since it was invented, and these days, one of its most popular uses is for tokenization all over the world. However, it is worth remembering its original use cases, such as securing privacy and fighting censorship, as this issue seems to be one of the most relevant ones today, and yet, it has been swept under the rug in favor of more popular solutions. This is where the Utopia Ecosystem comes into play — a project that aims to use this emerging tech for increasing privacy, particularly when it comes to communication.

Utopia was created by a group of developers that are known only as 1984 Group, consisting of cypherpunks that follow the ideology of privacy in order to avoid government pressure on developers by protecting their identities. The decision is not difficult to understand, as the pressure on software developers has been increasing as of late, and many developers may be uncomfortable revealing themselves as such.

Given that there are many users who have great privacy and censorship concerns, they may be interested in using the tools that Utopia has to offer, particularly as they aim for their products to be used in everyday circumstances. These products include things like:

  1. Umessenger – Messenger for personal communication.
  2. Voice messages with the ability to change your voice.
  3. Uchats – Public and private channels – where no one will censor you. Participate in discussions or start your own channels.
  4. Create and rebroadcast your sites privately using the Utopia P2P ecosystem network.
  5. Own token – which you can mine or make untraceable financial transactions
  6. A private file storage
  7. API for developers – you can create your own integrations and products on the network

The products differ from many other private data products, such as Signal or Theerema, which promise privacy, but still require credentials such as your email or phone. Lastly, the network also uses something called uNS — Utopia Name System — which is a decentralized registry that is the equivalent of the classical DNS.

Interview

The need for online privacy is greater than ever. Are people becoming aware of that?

Yes, they are, but the process of acknowledging that privacy isn’t an optional, but mandatory thing, is much slower than it should be. Most people know that privacy is good, but they are unwilling to make sacrifices for that. Basically, if you offer some solution for privacy but it is either expensive or inconvenient to use, people won’t bother with it. Theoretically, it may be possible to convince them, but we decided to play along and develop a privacy solution that will be easy to use, cheap and accessible. We want to reduce the price you have to pay for privacy, to a minimum.

How does your company fight censorship?

We provide our users with an ecosystem, where there is no censorship, no central government and no surveillance. But at the same time, in Utopia you have access to the same range of services and products that you have access to in the “big” Web.

So we offer our users an ecosystem where they can get privacy and not worry about censorship without sacrificing anything for that.

And you have your own privacy coin tied to the products. What can the coin be used for?

It can be used as payment for anything within the ecosystem: you can pay for goods and services with Crypton (or set up your online shop to accept Crypton), you can use it for poker games or you can pay for the platforms’ paid services. For example, registration of a domain name within Utopia requires a one-time fee in Crypton.

Where can the coin be exchanged?

There is a built-in exchange service in the Utopia application, where users can buy and sell Crypton for USDT. Our coin is also listed on a variety of decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges, so our proprietary service is not the only option.

You said that the coin can be mined — is mining as expensive as mining Bitcoin?

No, Crypton mining is not expensive at all. You can run Utopia mining bot on most modern home PCs and still use your PC for any task you usually use it for: you can work, play games, surf the Web, etc. The amount of resources used up by the bot is negligible.

After all, Crypton miners ensure anonymity and untraceability of transactions so nodes are specifically designed to be cheap and easy to run, to facilitate their numbers growth.

Once users mine the coin, where can they store it?

The Utopia application has a built-in Crypton wallet, which is really easy to use and convenient. However, of course, users may opt for storing their coins on third parties’ exchange accounts, but we do not recommend this.

The Utopia ecosystem even offers games, is that correct?

Yes, it is. We strive to create a secure ecosystem where you can get any services you get in the modern World Wide Web. And gaming is an essential component of the modern Internet. At the moment, there are two games available:  Chess and Poker (classic Texas Hod’em). In the latter you can even use Crypton for betting.

However, our API allows easy integration of any other game into the ecosystem, so we expect the list of available games to expand rather quickly.

Tell us a bit about API for developers?

A truly free Internet can exist only if users can find all the web sites, products and services they need in this ecosystem. However,we understand that we can’t develop all of it on our own. So we created a powerful API, which has a huge toolset for integrating any website, blog, project or e-commerce portal. Using the API, you can set up acceptance of payments in Crypton cryptocurrency, organize the mailing of messages to customers, ensure that your customers data cannot be even traced and get a lot of other benefits of the Utopia ecosystem.

Why the decision to keep developers’ identities secret?

A lot of people with a lot of money and power at their hands are not pleased with what we are doing. And I’m talking not only about governments, but also about large businesses. Users’ personal data brings billions of dollars to IT-giants, and the Utopia project is a great threat to this market, as it would decrease their supply of personal data. So we decided to err on the side of caution

And how big is the secure storage that you are offering?

Utopia’s Encrypted Containers are not limited in volume – you can protect as much data as you want. The only limitation is the storage capacity of your device.
